Launching Material 3.0
In 2019 we launched material 2.0 for our protection products and it has served us very well. But over the years vinyl technology has progressed to such a degree that we now feel there may be a better option available. As a result we've been actively evaluating possible replacements since the beginning of the year.
Just like with version 2.0 there are some key considerations when it comes to the material we use. Generally thicker films provide more protection, but at the cost of clarity and increased application difficulty, while also having a taller 'side wall' that collects dirt more easily. Our testing over the years has lead us to a sweet spot of 150 microns. This provides a sufficient level of protection while maintaining good clarity, with minimal dirt retention. Resulting in a cleaner looking protector, over a longer period, especially for Gravel and MTB riders.
Once we'd narrowed down a couple of viable options it was time for many test fittings and miles to evaluate the application process and performance out on the road and trails. What we noticed right away was how close in performance the materials were. Even during our stress testing it was hard to separate them on pure technical ability.
The key deciding factors then became how the material looks, feels and operates. If on road performance is equal, the distinction comes from the customer experience, especially with regards to installation. For this we needed to recruit a few friends who aren't as used to applying clear protection film as much as we are. This was vital feedback from the perspective of a first time customer who's never install a protector before but who obviously wants to get the best result.
It was from these tests that our final decision was made and we couldn't be happier with the improvement in quality that we can now offer. The biggest difference long time customers will notice is how much easier it is to achieve a clean, bubble free finish over a wider range of conditions. Another unexpected benefit is the cut lines for the protector are more visible on the sheet, making it easier to see and peel away. This is helpful because we leave the excess material around the protection to ensure the edges stay clean during transit, and so a small quality of life improvement, especially for cranks with asymmetric arms where distinguishing between drive side and non-drive side protectors is important.
Additionally we were able to work closely with our supplier to provide material 3.0 at the same price point, so there will be no direct increase in cost. We're super proud to be able to offer this, and so launching today all gloss clear protection products will utilise this improved material which is available on all crank, frame, shifter & brake protectors.
